A Small Ambler Kitchen Dreams Big

Project Overview

This retired Ambler couple was ready to say goodbye to their dated and disorganized kitchen. It felt small and cramped, with a wall separating the room from the rest of the home and a stairwell to the basement taking up much-needed space. In addition, the small square footage exacerbated the lack of storage and contributed to unwanted clutter.

The couple dreamed of a more spacious, contemporary kitchen that would reflect their modern aesthetic. They envisioned a bright, expansive space with clean lines, floating shelves, and a large statement window. They also wanted to connect the kitchen to the living area to create a more open layout, making it easy to entertain guests in their home.

DESIGN Process

The Custom Craft team worked with the homeowners to find the perfect design that would enable them to realize their dream within the reality of their budget. First, we created a more open flow and gained a bit of square footage by taking down the wall blocking off the kitchen. While the budget prohibited moving the stairwell, we maximized the space by relocating the back patio door and rearranging the sink, cooktop, and fridge for a better work triangle. This also created an opportunity to install a sleek quartz countertop that seamlessly wraps the edges of the room to provide plenty of counter space.

The feature with the biggest impact in the new space is a stunning picture window positioned directly above the sink. It draws in loads of natural light and offers beautiful views of the outside, making the small space feel bigger and brighter. The homeowners chose to complement the long, linear window with the modern, clean lines of flat-paneled wooden cabinetry and luxury vinyl plank flooring. Now, this couple can’t believe that the small space that was their old kitchen could ever feel so open and expansive!
