Hosting Made Easy: A Flourtown Transformation

Project Overview

This Flourtown first floor had remained untouched for years, and didn’t match the homeowner’s bold, eclectic style. Functionally, the kitchen had an impractical layout that made entertaining a challenge. An oddly angled wall between the kitchen and laundry area wasted valuable space, while wing and half walls created barriers between the kitchen and family room.

Beyond updating finishes, our clients dreamed of creating spaces that would work better for both daily life and the large gatherings they regularly host, often welcoming up to 30 guests. They wanted their home to feel updated, connected and inviting, while maintaining distinct areas for cooking, dining, and relaxing.

DESIGN Process

We began by addressing the layout challenges. Our team squared off the angular wall between the kitchen and laundry room, replacing an inefficient pantry closet with floor-to-ceiling cabinet storage. The redesigned laundry room cleverly uses cabinetry repurposed from the original kitchen, painted to match the new kitchen island and fitted with the previous kitchen faucet — sustainable choices that add character while maintaining quality. Removing the wing and half walls between the kitchen and family room opened sight lines and improved flow.

In addition, we widened doorways to create better connections between spaces and installed consistent hardwood flooring throughout the first floor. In the dining room, we preserved the couple’s existing furniture while breathing new life into the space with sophisticated wallpaper and statement lighting. Floral wallpaper and refined fixtures gave the powder room an elegant update that coordinates with the kitchen’s warm gold accents.

The kitchen’s new beverage center is the ultimate in form and function. Located just outside the main cooking zone, it features a dedicated prep sink, beverage fridge, space for glassware, and plenty of storage. This placement lets guests help themselves and stay connected to conversations, all while leaving the hosts plenty of room to cook. A separate coffee station adds convenience for everyday use. Quartz countertops provide a durable yet luxurious finish that perfectly balances the kitchen’s mix of style and practicality.
