Light-Filled Living with Effortless Flow in Plymouth Meeting

Project Overview

This Plymouth Meeting family felt confined by their cramped, one-cook kitchen that lacked natural light and open flow. To socialize with the person cooking, guests were forced to gather awkwardly around a too-small island, and the compartmentalized floor plan separated spaces that should work together.

The homeowners envisioned a bright, expansive kitchen with an open layout that could accommodate their love of hosting and reflect their preference for organic materials and a contemporary, comfortable style. They wanted a space that felt like home — not the builder-grade finishes they inherited when purchasing the house.

DESIGN Process

The Custom Craft team opened up the entire back of the home by removing walls between the kitchen, dining area, and family room. To preserve definition without sacrificing flow, we added structural posts with custom wooden caps and a half wall, breaking up the long span and preventing a “bowling alley” effect.

The kitchen itself was dramatically expanded. A new 10-foot peninsula now anchors the space, offering seating for nine and creating a central gathering spot. The quartz surface is accented by a custom cherry butcher block end cap. Overhead, three bicycle glass pendants add sculptural appeal and sustainable style.

Natural light floods the interior thanks to newly installed windows and multiple glass doors leading directly to the large deck. The family room connects seamlessly to this outdoor space, enhancing indoor-outdoor living and entertaining.

Smart storage abounds, including floor-to-ceiling natural cherry cabinets that flank a built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator, and a beverage station with wine cubbies and a dedicated seltzer unit — a playful nod to the family’s love of sparkling water. Inkwell blue lower cabinets add depth, while cherry uppers, champagne bronze hardware, and soft white walls keep the palette balanced and inviting.
