Collegeville Kitchen Remodel: Smarter Layout, Same Footprint

Dated kitchen with heavy cabinetry, dark finishes, and tight layout before remodel in Collegeville home
Kitchen remodel completed within existing footprint with improved flow and functionality

Project Overview

After 11 years in their Collegeville Colonial, this family had updated nearly every room in the house — just not the kitchen. The previous owners’ design just didn’t match their aesthetic, and it was showing its decades-old age. The style was heavy and dated. The island was an odd mix of round and square. A set of large double doors to the backyard ate into one side of the room and left the layout feeling pinched. The microwave sat above the oven in a spot no one wanted, and the counters collected everything they preferred to keep out of sight.

They weren’t looking to move walls or add square footage. For this Collegeville kitchen remodel, they wanted the same footprint to finally deliver: more storage, cleaner surfaces, and a kitchen that felt like theirs.

Design Process

Working within the existing footprint, the Custom Craft team replaced the double exterior doors with a larger single door— reclaiming wall space on one side of the kitchen while preserving the natural light. by the new triple window that we installed. The sink shifted down the wall, a new cabinet was added, and the layout finally made sense for how the family actually uses the kitchen.

Full-length cabinetry gives them somewhere to put the toaster, coffee maker, and everything else they want to keep out of sight. The microwave came down from above the oven. Now, counters can stay clear, and the kitchen feels calm.

For color, the homeowners chose Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog — a soft sage green that holds its own against the hickory floors and feels like bringing a bit of the outdoors in. The island and the hood trim is stained in a warm tone that provides a quiet contrast and keeps the space from feeling flat. The backsplash is a continuous quartz slab, the same material as the countertops. This grout-free style is easy to clean and minimalist, with nothing to interrupt the eye. Sconces on either side of the window and slim cabinet door molding in a modern profile deliver the feel the homeowner dreamed of: a delightful mix of eclectic and fun, crisp and clean.

"Our Custom Craft kitchen remodel has been high quality from start to finish. My husband had spoken with several project managers at other companies in regard to renovations in our home. We chose Custom Craft after speaking with Scott. Scott is patient, informative, trustworthy, and knowledgable. He drove out to our home twice after we switched our initial project of bathroom renovation to a kitchen renovation. He gave honest feedback on what we might encounter along the way. He explained the entire process and what we would expect throughout the renovation. Meeting the fabulous Julie was next. Julie helped me choose layout, colors, materials and presented a well thought out, beautiful and functional kitchen. Julie was always available when I had questions about the design process and as the project moved forward. Our project started right on time with Chris, lead carpenter. Chris’s level of craftsmanship is exceptional and he takes great pride in his work. We were so lucky to have him, he always made time to discuss any questions I had and explained what the goal was for each day. The carpentry in our kitchen is beautiful. Thank you, Chris! Chris, with Clark and Dakota, offered a high level of professionalism, making sure the work site was always moving forward and was clean for us at night. Custom Craft provided highly skilled plumbing and electrical contractors, Chuck, Shawn and Ralph, that resolved issues that popped up in our older home. Thank you, Rick, for painting all the gray away, and to Meghan and Matt for all your behind the scenes work. I would absolutely recommend Custom Craft for any home renovation and would hire this wonderful team for projects in the future. Everyone that I encountered during this process was professional, polite, patient, respectful, and answered all of my questions and concerns along the way. Do not hesitate to hire Custom Craft. They have built us a beautiful kitchen that we love!"
